During Wednesday night’s IPL 2023 match against Kolkata Knight Riders at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, Royal Challengers Bangalore’s stand-in captain Virat Kohli appeared to be in excellent form.

However, Kohli’s impressive performance was cut short when KKR all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer made a remarkable effort on the field to dismiss him after he had scored his 49th career fifty in the IPL.

In their home match, Royal Challengers Bangalore required 201 runs to secure a victory, with captain Kohli leading the charge on 54 runs, including six boundaries and 12 runs off Varun Chakravarthy’s over.

However, RCB suffered a setback when they lost the wicket of Mahipal Lomror for 34 runs off 18 balls.

KKR captain Nitish Rana brought in Andre Russell to bowl the 13th over of the innings, and on the first ball of his over, Kohli attempted a pull towards deep mid-wicket, only for Venkatesh Iyer to make a spectacular diving catch.

While watching the match from the stands of Chinnaswamy Stadium, Kohli’s wife and Bollywood star Anushka Sharma, like the rest of the Bengaluru crowd, was left stunned by Iyer’s impressive diving catch.

A video capturing Anushka Sharma’s reaction quickly went viral on social media.

Kohli’s dismissal for 54 runs off 37 balls meant that RCB’s hopes of making a comeback against KKR were dashed.

As a result, RCB could only manage to score 179 for 8 in 20 overs, falling short of the target by 21 runs.

Russell, who dismissed Kohli, had an impressive bowling performance, finishing with figures of 2/29, while Chakravarthy was awarded the ‘Player of the Match’ title for claiming 3/27 with the ball.

“We really needed that victory. We have been under the pump. We know once we get a good total – and anything above 200 was a good total – we can impart pressure. Once I get the ball, I try to do my best. I try to contribute in whatever way,” Russell stated during the post-match presentation.

Despite averaging only around 18 in IPL 2023 with the bat, the West Indies all-rounder did not seem overly concerned.

“I am still confident with the bat. Got a very good yorker tonight from Siraj. Part of the game. We just got to take it day by day. Recovery is very important for me. The older I get, the smarter I get with my body,” Russell added.
