Meanwhile, in Kampala, the Victoria Series for women’s T20Is is ongoing at the Lugogo Ground.
Thailand secured a victory in the first ODI against Zimbabwe, played at the Terdthai Cricket Ground located on the western outskirts of the capital, despite setting a relatively low target.
The team was struggling at 21/4 within the first eight overs of their batting innings, but skipper Naruemol Chaiwai’s unbeaten 57 helped stabilize the score.
A partnership with Nattaya Boochatham (25) further bolstered the team’s efforts, but the momentum was halted by Kelis Ndlovu, a left-arm orthodox bowler who had gained recognition in the U19 World Cup.
Ndlovu took an early wicket, dismissing Chanida Sutthiruang (11), and went on to dismantle Thailand’s tail, claiming a total of 5 wickets for 22 runs.
Not to be outshined by her fellow southpaw, Putthawong exhibited her own excellent finger spin, causing Zimbabwe’s collapse.
At the 12th over, the visitors appeared to be sitting comfortably at 50/2, but Putthawong managed to claim two crucial wickets in quick succession – Modester Mupachikwa (1) and Mary-Anne Musonda (0) – within six balls.
In the same over, she also managed to trap Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano (18) and beat the defences of both Josephine Nkomo and Loreen Tshuma (0).
Adding to the impressive display was leg-spinner Suleeporn Laomi who contributed 2/13 from the other end.
Finally, Putthawong dismissed Momvelo Sibanda (0) to seal the win.
The match was held at the Terdthai Cricket Ground located in the western outskirts of the capital, where Thailand won the first ODI despite posting a modest total.

Thai skipper Naruemol Chaiwai (57*) played a crucial role in the team’s batting innings, as she held the innings together after the team had slumped to 21/4 within the first eight overs.
Chaiwai formed a crucial partnership of 64 with Nattaya Boochatham (25), which helped the team to reach three figures.
However, the Thai fightback was eventually thwarted by the left-arm orthodox of U19 World Cup starlet Kelis Ndlovu, who tormented the Thai side.
Ndlovu’s spell included the vital wicket of Chanida Sutthiruang (11) in her first over and she continued to run through the tail of the Thai side, ending up with 5/22.
Refusing to be outshined by her fellow southpaw, Putthawong retaliated with her own excellent finger spin, resulting in the collapse of Zimbabwe’s batting line-up.
At the 12th over, the visitors appeared to be comfortably settled at 50/2, but Putthawong managed to claim two crucial wickets in just six balls – Modester Mupachikwa (1) and the key wicket of Mary-Anne Musonda (0).
In the same over, she also managed to trap Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano (18) and beat the defences of both Josephine Nkomo and Loreen Tshuma (0) in the 17th over.
Adding to the impressive display was leg-spinner Suleeporn Laomi who contributed 2/13 from the other end.
Finally, Putthawong dismissed Momvelo Sibanda (0) to secure the much-needed victory.
The second and third matches of the ODI series are scheduled to be played on Friday and Sunday respectively. Following the ODI series, a four-match T20I series will take place.
The Victoria Series trophy is currently up for grabs, with five teams competing for their chance to claim it.
The reigning champions, Zimbabwe, are away on their Thailand tour this year.
The T20I tournament features four of the best emerging nations from East Africa, which is known to be a hotbed of international cricket.
One of the teams, United Arab Emirates, is led by Chaya Mughal. Despite having mixed results in different conditions, they have managed to secure one win and one defeat so far.
Mughal played a crucial role in their win over Kenya, top-scoring with 24 runs, but their team was later defeated by Tanzania, who chased down a total of 139 runs with 13 balls to spare.
