The fitness of Punjab Kings’ captain Shikhar Dhawan and key allrounder Liam Livingstone is causing concern as the team returns home to Mohali for a brief visit to face the determined Royal Challengers Bangalore on Thursday (April 20).
Despite missing their recent exciting two-wicket triumph in Lucknow due to a shoulder injury, Dhawan, aged 37, will be delighted that a number of unexpected heroes stepped up against LSG, enabling the team to end their two-match losing streak.

Despite having secured three victories in their first five matches, PBKS are still striving to maintain their winning form.
Although they commenced the season with two consecutive wins, they then suffered defeats in the next two matches.
One of the contributing factors is the absence of key players: Livingstone, who has yet to make an appearance, is sidelined once again due to a niggle sustained during practice before the Lucknow match, and Kagiso Rabada only joined the squad for the last two games.
In addition, the recent injury to Dhawan has dealt another blow to a team that has been struggling with inconsistent batting.
Although he was unable to make an impact with the bat, Sam Curran was a standout performer in the bowling department, and the team discovered a new batting hero in Sikander Raza against LSG.
However, the most encouraging aspect was the runs scored by their designated finisher, Shahrukh Khan, who was supported despite an underwhelming performance in the previous season.
The Tamil Nadu batsman employed his characteristic style to provide the finishing touches and guide PBKS to victory at the Ekana Stadium, and the team will be hoping that this is just the start of his resurgence.
Curran, Arshdeep Singh, and Kagiso Rabada have impressively spearheaded the PBKS bowling attack, making it one to keep an eye on.
In contrast, RCB’s bowling, particularly in the death overs, has once again been scrutinized.
While Mohammed Siraj has stood out as a performer, RCB has frequently been at fault for conceding too many runs in the latter stages of an innings, partly due to the short boundaries of their home ground.

Day 3: Stumps - Australia lead by 296 runs
Despite their bowling issues, RCB possess one of the most formidable opening pairs in Faf du Plessis and former captain Virat Kohli, followed by the destructive Glenn Maxwell.
Their batting depth was highlighted in their recent loss to the Chennai Super Kings, where they nearly chased down a record target.
Maxwell and du Plessis were instrumental in keeping them in the contest, while Dinesh Karthik’s return to form and rediscovery of his finishing skills were positive signs even in defeat.
In addition, the impact sub Suyash Prabhudesai’s batting was crucial in taking the game to the penultimate ball in a daunting 227-run chase, making it a batting line-up unlike any other.
Similar to PBKS, RCB are also in search of consistency in their campaign.
They presently find themselves in eighth place on the points table, having secured only two wins in five matches.
However, they have been unlucky in a couple of games that could have gone either way.
On Thursday, April 20th at 3:30 PM IST, the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali will host a cricket match.
In the two games played this season, captains have favored chasing, but it hasn’t always led to the desired outcome.
The weather forecast predicts a partly cloudy day, offering some respite from the blistering heat wave of the north.
The two teams competing in the upcoming match are Punjab Kings and RCB.
The management of Punjab Kings is facing a dilemma due to the fitness concerns of Dhawan and Livingstone.
The duo’s fitness will be evaluated prior to the game, and if they are deemed match-fit, they may feature in the starting XI.
Kagiso Rabada, with 16 wickets in 7 outings against RCB, has a fantastic track record against them.
He has an impressive economy rate of just 7.21 and has dismissed Kohli and Karthik three times each, along with Maxwell and du Plessis twice.
His performance against RCB’s top batsmen could pose a significant challenge for the visitors.
The probable starting XI for Punjab Kings includes Shikhar Dhawan as captain, along with Prabhsimran Singh, Matthew Short/Liam Livingstone, Harpreet Singh Bhatia, Sikandar Raza, Sam Curran, Jitesh Sharma (wk), Shahrukh Khan, Harpreet Brar, Kagiso Rabada, and Arshdeep Singh.
Royal Challengers Bangalore’s team news reports that Josh Hazlewood, who recently recovered from a lengthy Achilles tendinitis injury, joined the RCB squad two games ago.
However, he hasn’t bowled in the nets, and his participation in the upcoming away fixture remains doubtful.
Virat Kohli has an impressive strike rate of 171.43 against Arshdeep Singh of Punjab Kings and has never lost his wicket to the left-arm pacer in the IPL.
Although the sample size is small, this statistic could be significant for the upcoming match.
The probable starting XI for Royal Challengers Bangalore is Virat Kohli, Faf du Plessis (c), Mahipal Lomror, Glenn Maxwell, Shahbaz Ahmed, Dinesh Karthik (wk), Harshal Patel, Wanindu Hasaranga, Wayne Parnell, Vijaykumar Vyshak, and Mohammed Siraj.

Some interesting statistics related to the upcoming match include:
- Shikhar Dhawan is on the verge of reaching a significant milestone of 6500 IPL runs, with only 23 runs needed to achieve this feat. He also holds the record for the most number of half-centuries in the tournament’s history, with 49 to his name.
- Glenn Maxwell, on the other hand, is just 5 runs away from completing 2500 IPL runs. It will be interesting to see if he can achieve this milestone in the upcoming game.
