Kohli-Gambhir Dispute: Fine and Who Pays?
The feud between Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir, and the subsequent fines imposed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), have raised some pertinent questions: what is the fine in proportion to a player’s salary, and who bears the brunt of paying it?
According to the BCCI, both Kohli and Gambhir were charged with a Level 2 offense, resulting in a fine of 100 percent of their match fees. Kohli’s yearly salary of Rs 15 crore translates to a fee of around 1.07 crore per game, which is the amount he should forfeit for his involvement in the Lucknow incident.

However, if the Royal Challengers Bangalore make it to the playoffs and beyond, the value of a match fee would vary depending on the number of matches played by the franchise and its division with Kohli’s annual fee.
Despite being fined 100% of his match fee for the May 1 incident, Virat Kohli is unlikely to lose out on any of his IPL earnings.
According to sources at Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), the franchise management will bear the cost of his fine, as they believe in not cutting fines from players’ salaries.

Gautam Gambhir’s remuneration remains unknown, but it is speculated that the franchise will also pay any fine he incurs.
Other franchises have similar systems, with some avoiding cutting match fees for fines, even for slow over rates.
At the end of each season, the BCCI sends an invoice for all the fines imposed on a team, and the franchise pays it.
However, some experts argue that players should be held accountable for their mistakes and acts of indiscipline.

Meanwhile, new information suggests that Naveen-Ul-Haq may not be entirely innocent in the incident, with the Afghan cricketer believed to have hurled abuses at Kohli.
He was fined 50% of his match fee, which amounts to around Rs 1.8 lakh, given his salary of Rs 50 lakh per season.
