The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are set to host the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in a crucial Indian Premier League 2023 (IPL 2023) clash at the iconic Eden Gardens.
Both teams are still in contention for a spot in the playoffs. Currently, only the Gujarat Titans have secured their place.
If the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) claim victory over the Delhi Capitals in the afternoon game on Saturday, it is highly likely that they will also secure a playoff spot.
For LSG, a win in this match will guarantee their qualification. Moreover, they will aim for a convincing victory to surpass CSK and secure a top-two finish.
Teams finishing in the top-two positions are rewarded with an additional opportunity to vie for a place in the final.
The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) face extremely slim chances of qualifying for the playoffs.
Under the leadership of Nitish Rana, they currently have 12 points from 13 matches, with a Net Run Rate of (-0.256).
Even if they emerge victorious against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), their maximum attainable points will be 14, placing them at the same level as the Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, and Royal Challengers Bangalore.
In such a scenario, KKR will be fervently hoping for significant defeats for both Mumbai and Bangalore in their respective matches, enabling them to secure the fourth spot in the points table and qualify for the playoffs.
Leading up to the clash between LSG and KKR, the weather in Kolkata had been unfavorable for cricket, with heavy rainfall persisting for the past few days.

The Eden Gardens ground had been under covers for a duration of at least two days, raising concerns that the match might be washed out.
However, Saturday morning brought welcome news as there were no signs of cloud cover.
According to Accuweather, there are no predictions of rainfall during the match hours, which are scheduled from 7 to 11 pm IST, in Kolkata.
In the unfortunate event of the KKR vs LSG match being completely washed out, it would result in Kolkata being eliminated from the tournament.
On the other hand, LSG would remain in contention for a playoff spot, holding 16 points.

However, their fate would depend on the outcomes of the Mumbai Indians (MI) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) matches.
Additionally, the performance of CSK in their game against DC would also play a significant role in determining LSG’s prospects in the tournament.
