DC Against SRH: Ricky Ponting Slams Prithvi Shaw For Lacking “Spark At The Top”

Ponting had previously hailed Shaw as the top performer for Delhi Capitals in the beginning of IPL 2023.

However, the opener’s performance has not lived up to his coach’s expectations as he has only managed to score a mere 47 runs across six games.

This serves as a clear contradiction to Ponting’s earlier assessment of Shaw’s capabilities.

Prithvi Shaw’s lackluster performance in IPL 2023 has been a major letdown for the Delhi Capitals (DC) franchise.

The opener has only managed to accumulate a paltry 47 runs across six games, with his average and strike rate not even worth mentioning.

DC’s head coach, Ricky Ponting, expressed his disappointment with Shaw’s form during a press conference ahead of their game against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Ponting revealed that the team had high hopes for Shaw at the beginning of the season, but the opener has failed to deliver on their expectations.

During the press conference, Ricky Ponting, former Australian captain, pointed out that Prithvi Shaw has been struggling to perform for the past 12 to 14 matches.

“It’s not just this season, but the last six or seven games of the previous season as well.

In fact, it has been 13 matches since Prithvi last scored a half-century while opening the batting,” Ponting informed the reporters.

His statement emphasizes the extent of Shaw’s poor form and highlights the need for him to improve his performance in the upcoming matches.

According to DC coach Ricky Ponting, the reason for Prithvi Shaw’s failure to perform is not only due to his lack of runs but also his inability to play enough balls.

Ponting expressed his disappointment with Shaw’s inability to provide the team with a strong start at the top of the order, which is what they were hoping for.

Despite Shaw being a match-winner and one of the reasons for his retention in the team, he has only managed to score a meager 40-odd runs this season.

Ponting emphasized that if Shaw can bat through a certain number of balls, they have a high chance of winning 95% of the matches.

However, Shaw’s current performance has fallen short of their expectations.

Despite being billed as one of the standout performers for Delhi Capitals, Prithvi Shaw’s performance in IPL 2023 has not lived up to Ricky Ponting’s expectations.

Ponting admitted that he was impressed with Shaw’s work ethic when he arrived at the DC camp, and even publicly declared him as a potential standout player for the tournament.

However, Shaw’s lackluster performance has proven Ponting wrong so far.

Nevertheless, Ponting remains optimistic about Shaw’s future prospects, stating that if the current top order does not work out, there is no reason why Shaw cannot make a comeback to the team.

Ponting hopes that if Shaw returns, he will be able to finish the tournament strongly.

Ricky Ponting has expressed his belief that the role of an anchor in a cricket team is gradually becoming obsolete.

According to Ponting, teams are now prioritizing explosive starts rather than relying on a single anchor to score consistently.

He notes that many team lineups lack batsmen with strike rates between 115-120, and instead look to send in another explosive batter when a wicket falls to maintain the momentum.

It appears that teams are now focusing on building a team that is well-rounded with multiple power hitters, rather than relying on a single anchor to carry the team’s batting lineup.
