Subsequently, he will lead the team in the ICC Men’s World Cup 2023 Qualifier tournament in Zimbabwe.
In a separate appointment, Andre Coley, the former wicketkeeper-batsman, has been appointed as the head coach for the Test and ‘A’ teams.
Coley’s coaching journey begins with the senior team during the home series against India in July.
Expressing his thoughts on his appointment, Daren Sammy enthusiastically stated, “I perceive it as a challenge, yet one that I am fully prepared for and thrilled about.
I eagerly anticipate this opportunity, particularly when considering the talented players within our ranks and the positive influence I can impart within the team environment.
My approach as a coach will mirror the same fervor, determination for triumph, and unwavering adoration for West Indies cricket that I possessed as a player.”
As Daren Sammy reflected on the wealth of talent within the team, he expressed his optimism by saying, “Upon observing the white-ball matches in South Africa, I witnessed the emergence of promising leaders in Shai Hope and Rovman Powell, alongside the valuable guidance of Andre Coley.
This instilled a strong belief in our collective ability to excel. I am eagerly anticipating the opportunity to share my knowledge, strategic expertise, effective communication, and adept man-management skills. The prospect of devising plans and witnessing the players execute them fills me with excitement and enthusiasm.”

Having previously led the West Indies to victory in two T20 World Cups (2012 and 2016), Daren Sammy assumes the role of head coach, bringing with him a wealth of experience.
Sammy has also garnered coaching expertise through his involvement with the Peshawar Zalmi in the PSL and the St. Lucia Zouks in the CPL.
Meanwhile, Andre Coley joins the team with a comprehensive coaching background, having worked at various levels within West Indies cricket.
He previously served as the interim coach during the team’s tours of Zimbabwe and South Africa earlier this year.
Expressing his gratitude, Andre Coley remarked, “I feel immensely privileged to be appointed as the Head Coach of the red-ball team for West Indies Men’s cricket, especially after serving in the interim capacity during the tours of Zimbabwe and South Africa.
I eagerly embrace the upcoming challenges and the opportunities that lie ahead as we set our sights on climbing the Test rankings and qualifying for the World Test Championship final in June 2025.
Additionally, I am excited to collaborate with all our stakeholders, fostering strong relationships and cultivating a high-performance mindset.

“I am particularly enthusiastic about working closely with the ‘A Team’ as we strive to maximize opportunities for competitive cricket beyond our first-class competitions, providing players with invaluable exposure to diverse international conditions.
Leveraging my expertise in analytics, leadership style, and technical knowledge, in conjunction with collaborative efforts alongside Daren, I am confident that we will make a positive impact on player development and team performances,” Coley concluded.
